Anxiety is something that most of us have experienced. The butterflies in the stomach before a big event such as speaking in front of people or the first date. If the butterflies become fast breathing, sweating, dread and a desire to run then that is something much more. Grounding is a way to quickly reduce the symptoms and can also break the escalation. In this workshop we work on developing a grounding technique or several that you can use to stop the anxiety response. We will also talk about what is necessary for that technique to be there when you need it.
Meg was walking in the park unwinding after a stressful day in which she had a tense conversation with her supervisor. She realized that as she walked she was becoming more and more worked up instead of calming down. She was thinking of the conversation with her boss that prompted the walk in the first place. She analyzed every word he said to her, evaluated her responses as “weak” and she went over what she wanted to say. Then she began to think about what was going to happen now. Would she be fired? What then? She had bills to pay, student loans, kids and mortgage. What if she couldn’t find another job?
Then she began to breathe harder and faster, her stomach was tight, she felt sweaty and jumpy. She began looking around for the “cause” and saw some joggers but no one else. As she walked she heard what sounded like footsteps behind her. Was that someone behind her? All she wanted to do was get out of the park and go home right then.
