How to Create Goals that Motivate
And when we are motivated we achieve!
Creating goals is the first step in just about everything us human beings do. We may not even be aware of many of our goals in any given day. For example, if you have the desire to go to the bank, get groceries and pay the bills or do the laundry, clean the house, meet up with friends, these plans are goals.
When Maggie came in for therapy, she was surprised that the first thing we talked about were her goals for therapy. Our goals drive the progress and ensure that therapy has a purpose and direction. Also once goals are achieved then we know it is time to end therapy. Maggie described her reasons for seeking therapy was limitations due to injuries in an accident. She had put on weight after the accident that prevented her from doing all the things that she used to do. Her goals are those things that she wanted as a result of coming to therapy which were basically to stop feeling so down and fearful about the accident and figure out how to lose weight.
Maggie knew that since the accident so many things had changed and she didn’t even know where to start. Setting goals is step one. It sounds simple. A goal is a statement about what we want to see happen. Every new year, many of us set goals or new year’s resolutions to finally change or improve something in our lives. Sadly about 80% of people stop working on their new year’s resolutions within a month. Goal setting when you know how can result in goals that you actually are motivated to work on.
