Breaking Free From Social Media Addiction
Welcome to the Mini Workshop Series
Janine sought therapy for stress because she “just can’t get organized” after her divorce and get her life on track. As we talked, she discussed how she would get started with a task, start to doubt she could do the work and then end up on TickTok to look up ways to get organized. Her use of social media went from an occasional distraction at lunch to hours spent throughout every day “doom scrolling.”
Janine didn’t have a problem with organization. She had a problem with social media. In the beginning she used social media to stay connected with friends from “back in the day” and family. After a divorce and the Covid pandemic, she found that she was on social media for hours every day to reduce her stress.
What happened as a result of over using social media is an increase in stress, anxiety and depressive symptoms, lack of getting things done with her new living situation with her toddler son after her divorce and hours lost because of social media. One time her son had picked up her phone and played with it for a minute before putting it down somewhere. She panicked when she couldn’t find it and realized she needed to do something.
Her experience is not unusual. With the pandemic and loss of social connections, most of us turned to social media for that connection. Because social media is addictive by design, is it any wonder that there are lots of people finding that their usage has gotten out of control. As with addiction in general, there is an increase in anxiety and depressive symptoms, decrease in ability to cope and lower satisfaction of life ratings.
