Awareness as a term has become mainstream. But what does it mean? Awareness is our ability to tune in to the world around us, our body sensations and the thoughts that buzz nonstop through our mind. Some people are super aware of their surroundings as a meaning made from traumatic experiences or become so numb to physical sensations that they aren’t aware of signals such as hunger or need to relieve oneself. Others blunder through their day without barely noticing the world around them or inside them.
Vance found that he was having a hard time shaking the break up with his long term boyfriend of 12 years. He found that work which had always been a sanctuary to him was suffering. He had begun having trouble sleeping and the stomach issues that he had for years was suddenly worse. Concerned friends suggested therapy. When the therapist asked about what he was thinking and feeling associated to the break up, Vance had a difficult time voicing either. “I just never paid any attention to how I felt.”
One of the most important attributes when it comes to making changes whether emotionally or physically is our ability to tune in and thereby assess. Without first being able to tune in, we are going to struggle to implement changes. Vance was one who ignored emotional thoughts or sensations and as a result when he faced emotional upset, he didn’t clearly recognize what he was experiencing, where it came from and he said his tears often “came out of nowhere.” Thoughts that drove his emotional responses were ignored so the first task for Vance was to develop awareness so that he could tune in to what his brain and body was experiencing.
